If you're looking at homes for sale and not finding anything you like, building your own home might sound like an option. It is for many people, but which route you take is not a decision to make lightly.
Buying a Pre-Built Home
Existing houses, or houses in developments that are currently being constructed, are more likely to be located closer to urban centers where you might work and socialize. If the house is already built and ready for move-in, you'll have no delay -- you can start living there immediately. The house is also likely to be already connected to city sewer and water systems, or at least have a septic system installed and ready for use.
However, pre-built homes are also pre-designed. Other than changing some fixtures like cabinets and changing the color scheme, you're pretty much stuck with that floor plan. Adding or changing rooms would require some intense construction.
Building Your Home
If you really want a home that fits what you need and want, building your own home (or going with a custom builder who offers several modifiable floor plans) could work. You'd have a much better chance of owning a home that matches your dream home description.
However, you'd need to purchase land first, and then get the right building permits; sometimes the home builder can help with those. You'd need to ensure the city could connect the house to city sewer and water systems or that there is a water source on the land that you could use as a well. (And then you'd need to drill and maintain that well.) Available land is also usually located farther away from town centers, requiring more driving time.
